About Dr. Vivek Patkar

Dr. Vivek Patkar is now an Independent Researcher. He was a Professor of Quantitative Methods and Operations Management at the ICFAI Business School, Mumbai. He left that post in order to devote himself completely to the research in the areas of his varied interests.  Prior to that, he worked as an Operations Research Specialist in the Planning Division of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for 25 years. There he worked on several schemes and projects covering land-use planning, infrastructure financing, area development and transport. He initiated development of a comprehensive information system employing several geo-referencing tools for urban planning and management. Some of his Remote Sensing and GIS applications with reference to preparation of the Regional Plan for Mumbai Metropolitan Region 1996-2011 are considered as pioneering efforts in the field.
He holds B.Sc.(Hons.) in Mathematics and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Operational Research, all from the University of Delhi. Dr. Patkar is associated with the Department of Geography, Economics and Library & Information Science of Mumbai University for several years and has been a resource person to their numerous courses and seminars. He is a Visiting Faculty to the Department of Library and Information Science since 1985 and is currently a Member of its Ad-hoc Board of Studies.
Besides co-authoring five books, he published two books in Marathi, one on "nuances of research (2007)" and the other on the finer aspects of mathematics (2008), which are well received.  To his credit are over "250 research papers and articles published" in numerous technical journals and professional magazines. His publications cover the fields of operations research and computer applications, mathematical programming, urban planning, transport, telecommunications, library & information science and societal management. Currently he runs a column ‘MathMagic’ in the Maharashtra Times, Mumbai every Wednesday covering different aspects of mathematics.
Dr. Patkar is a Member of the Editorial Board of the international journal entitled Human Systems Management published by the IOS Press, the Netherlands and also that of Journal of Geomatics of the Indian Society of Geomatics. He is associated with a large number of academic and research institutions and professional bodies in India and abroad.
