About Professor A. C. Tikekar

Professor A. C. Tikekar is a senior library professional in India. He has more then five decades of experience in managing different levels of academic libraries and teaching of library and information science. Currently, he is a Director of the 21st Century Library Centre, Mumbai and also a Trustee of Mumbai Marathi Grantha Sangrahalaya. He is also guiding the compilation of the National Bibliography of Indian Languages II – Marathi section, a project of the Sahitya Akademi.
He retired in 1995 as the Professor & Head of Department of Library Science and University Librarian, University of Mumbai after serving there for more than two decades.  He has worked as UGC Guest Faculty in three universities besides working as a Counsellor at MLIS programme of the IGNOU in Mumbai for ten years. He has contributed a number of articles, conference papers and delivered addresses at various institutes in the country. He has been invited by the radio & TV media on number of occasions to discuss issues related to books, libraries and library profession in general. Professor Tikekar has more then forty years of teaching and research experience. He has guided twenty five M. Lib. Sc. Dissertations and has acted as an external examiner for Ph.D. Theses of several universities.
He has served as an Expert Member on numerous committees of the UGC, State Govt and Central Govt.  His areas of specialization include Academic and Public Library Systems and Services, Library and Information Science Training and Education, Comparative and International Librarianship, Restructuring Libraries for Computerisation and Networking, Internet Resources for Study and Research and Digitization of library and archival material.
Prof Tikekar has held a prestigious position as a Member of the Raja RamMohun Roy Library Foundation of Govt of India, Kolkata (2000-03).  He has visited the UK under the British Council Visitorship programme in 1987. Besides visiting select Academic and Public Libraries like Oxford, Cambridge, London and Sussex University Libraries and British Library & India Office Library, attended the IFLA International Conference in Brighton.  Also visited US and Canada in 1997 on a Library study tour. Observed working of significant libraries like Library of Congress, Washington, United Nations Library, New York, New York Public Library, JF Kennedy Presidential Library, OCLC & ALA Offices and Libraries of Universities including Harvard, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvanic, Toronto and MIT.
He is a Life Member of the Indian Library Association (ILA) and the International Librarian Member of American Library Association (ALA).
